The memory of Princess Diana in her ivory dress shimmering down the hall of St. Paul's Cathedral is an indelible image for many—at least for the seven hundred million who tuned in that day in 1981.

The duo wanted to evoke romance at its highest, and drew inspiration from the airy creations of artists such as Botticelli and Renoir. According to fashion writer Lisa Marsh, Renaissance paintings, as well as garments worn by the most sensuous women in cinema, including those of Vivian Leigh in Gone with the Wind, were all “recreated [in the dress] to some degree.”
